Personal branding is crucial for professional success, emphasizing authenticity, innovation, and community. Leveraging unique identities fosters connections and builds trust amidst competition.

Have you noticed Substack notes bemoaning the success of celebrity writers?

Ok, maybe it’s just me.

But those who complain about the sudden popularity of the “new girl or guy” on the platform might do themselves a favor to look behind the curtain to see how these personalities cultivate a loyal following.

Art of MEL is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

They will see that readers who flock to public figures feel they “know” them. They don’t know them, per se, but the parasocial relationships they’ve formed with the writer help readers feel confident about what to expect when they click the link.

And while these grievance notes and essays may win followers and likes for the aggrieved writer, the campaign does little to help the budding audience understand the aggrieved writer’s actual work.

What grievance blogging ultimately does is shift the spotlight away from the very thing new writers need most: clarity of voice and trust in their work.

While complaints may generate momentary attention, they ask readers to bond over dissatisfaction rather than meaning. When readers understand who you are, what you stand for, and what they’ll receive by returning, they feel more confident and secure in your authenticity.

Weak Signal

Grievance muddies that signal. It tells the audience what you oppose, but not yet why you, the writer, matter. And in a crowded ecosystem, audiences don’t stay for irritation—they stay for resonance.

And every writer can naturally achieve resonance with their audience. That is, if they do a little campaign building that gains attention for their personal brand rather than attention to what they dislike.

When I mention campaigning, readers may think of political campaigning, which is intentional, as the best examples of grievance messaging come from politics.

In politics, grievance-driven messaging, fueled by outrage, resistance, and “us vs. them” rhetoric, has long proven effective at mobilizing voters and rallying support. However, when budding writers mimic this style in their Substack posts or Notes, particularly by criticizing the platform success of celebrity writers, they may gain momentary engagement but undermine their long-term goal: developing a memorable personal brand and cultivating parasocial trust with readers.

Unlike political campaigns that benefit from polarization, writers thrive when readers feel emotionally connected and intellectually curious about their voice and perspective. Grievance blogging may feel cathartic or justified, but it rarely invites new readers into the writer’s world. Instead, it may repel them by highlighting what the writer dislikes, rather than what they offer.

Shift the focus. Writers can move away from grievance by consistently sharing their values, creative worldview, and unique tone, which are key building blocks of a parasocial relationship. Every post is an opportunity to foster intimacy, not just argue a point.

Personal Brand Building

So, how does personal branding help writers build genuine connections with potential readers?

  • Personal branding creates a consistent identity that fosters trust and familiarity, making parasocial relationships more natural and meaningful.

As a narrative strategist with brand marketing experience, I aim to demonstrate, using historical and contemporary examples, why personal branding is the driving force behind professional relevance and impact today.

Personal branding has become essential for success in today’s dynamic environment. In 2026 and beyond, effective branding is the linchpin of professional and individual achievement. It’s not merely about differentiation; it’s about forging authentic connections, identifying your target audience, and establishing enduring trust, which inspires respect and admiration.

For individuals, branding today is not about blending in; it’s about standing out. It’s about embracing one’s unique identity to make a lasting impression.

Why try to fit in when you were born to stand out?

In such a competitive environment, those who innovate and communicate their unique vision—through a pitch deck or personal presence—stand apart.

Equally important is the notion of community. Personal branding is not about going it alone, but about creating tribes and forging meaningful connections. The rise of digital platforms has amplified this dynamic, enabling people to connect with like-minded individuals worldwide.

By crafting a personal brand that resonates, you build a loyal community that supports growth and success.

The lesson is straightforward: personal branding is the essential tool for navigating today’s complexities. Whether you’re analyzing business data or pioneering technology, your ability to clearly communicate your unique strengths is paramount.

Let your work and presence embody your brand.

Confidence is key.

Whether inspired by ancient gods or powerful symbols, recognize your own strength. Play to your strengths, embrace your uniqueness, and let your attributes shine.

In a world where everyone is for themselves, creating tribes—built on authenticity and shared values—remains vital for forging communities and achieving lasting impact.

The 2026 landscape offers both challenges and opportunities for personal branding. Navigating it well demands authenticity, creativity, and clear communication—traits at the heart of a powerful brand.

But for those who master this art, the rewards are boundless. To begin, define your narrative, identify your tribe, and assert your unique presence in your field. If you’re ready to start or need guidance, reach out or stay connected for actionable steps and future insights.

Go, slay! Not with Grievance messaging, but authenticity
